I couple of years ago I bought an untested Wargods pcb without a harddrive from eBay. I was just searching the net to see if anyone had yet dumped the low-res hard drive image for this game and happened to find this thread. I know this is my first post here, and also that this is an old thread now, but I thought i'd post some information I have as it may help out someone. Anyone that can use the MAME debugger should be able to find the drive specific code and hack around it. That someone was successful and released the "any IDE rom" for KI2.īack on topic, I assume the same serial number check exists in WarGods (and WG3DH) but as I stated I never devoted any time to confirming that and coding around it. Someone then set out using the MAME debugger to locate the serial number checks in the KI2 boot rom and code around them so their KI2 boards wouldn't be useless when the hard drives eventually failed. Midway never shipped KI2 hard disk replacement kits (or WarGods or WG3DH) as far as I know with anything but the special ST9420AG drives so they never had to release an "any IDE rom". KI2 used a ST9420AG drive (the same as WarGods & WG3DH) but now Midway changed their protection to look for two leading zeros in the serial number and had Seagate make specific ST9420AG drives with the zeros in the IDE information. Operators soon figured out that any IDE drive could be used with the new boot rom as long as an exact clone of the drive was made and they could avoid the high cost of the replacement kits. The boot rom still shows up as version "L 1.5d" but the model number check was removed. Of course those drives wouldn't work with the original boot rom so they also sent out updated boot roms (U98 chips) with the kits. When the original drives began failing and Midway ran out of those drives they began using Seagate "ST9810AG"s and shipping them out in KI Hard Disk Drive Replacement Kits. In KI the boot rom checked for the exact model number of the drive "ST9150AG" in the IDE information. Midway themselves did the "any IDE rom" for KI.
